The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has cut duties on onions and sugar to control their prices in the market. The duty on onion imports has been lowered from 10 per cent to 5 per cent, and the regulatory duty (RD) on sugar from 30 per cent to 20 per cent. The cuts follow a letter from the Ministry of Commerce.
Two separate notifications to this effect, signed by NBR chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem, were issued on Thursday.
The new duty rate on sugar will remain in force until 28 February next year, and the new rate on onions until 31 December.
Earlier, on 11 October, the Ministry of Commerce asked the NBR to withdraw the duty on onions and to reduce duties on crude soybean oil, palm oil and sugar.
