Navy chief Admiral M Nazmul Hassan has inaugurated the Bangladesh Navy's "Tree Plantation Campaign-2026" as part of the government's programme to plant 25 crore trees in five years.

He formally opened the campaign by planting a sapling at Naval Headquarters on 12 July. A special munajat (prayer) was then offered for the campaign's success. Principal staff officers at Naval Headquarters, area commanders of the various naval areas, senior military and civilian officials and sailors were present.

According to a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), Prime Minister Tarique Rahman launched the nationwide "25 crore trees in five years" programme on 9 July. Following on from that, the navy is carrying out plantation across the country under the theme "Let us adorn the country with trees; Bangladesh before all".

The navy chief said every member of the navy must plant trees from wherever they are posted to help carry out the government's programme, giving equal weight to development and environmental protection so as to build a safe and liveable Bangladesh for future generations.

He stressed planting more trees in coastal areas in particular. In his view, coastal plantation will play an important role in coping with natural disasters, keeping the environment in balance and reducing the adverse effects of climate change.

To carry out the campaign successfully, saplings of fruit, timber and medicinal trees are being planted at all naval bases, establishments and coastal areas.
