The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has ordered that from Sunday watermelons in Natore must be sold by the piece, not by the kg.

Mehedi Hasan Tanvir, assistant director of the directorate, gave the order during a market monitoring drive at about 2pm on Saturday (16 March).

He said that from Sunday (17 March) no trader may sell watermelons by the kg, and legal action will be taken against anyone who does. Last year the district administration ran drives and ordered all seasonal fruit traders not to sell watermelons by the kg. But this year again, traders are buying watermelons by the piece from the fields and selling them by the kg at market, setting prices as they please, he said.

During the market monitoring drive, two fruit shops at Nichabazar in the town were fined five thousand taka for not displaying price lists. Owners of various shopping centres were also advised to display correct prices and sell goods at fair prices.
