The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has fined a trader in Natore Tk 50,000 for ripening mangoes with a chemical.

The fine was imposed during a drive at around 1pm on Tuesday (20 May).

Mohammad Nazmul Hasan, deputy director of the directorate, said guti mangoes had begun reaching the market from 15 May, and the drive was carried out at Ahmedpur bazar in Natore to check whether chemicals were being used on them. Evidence was found at the mango depot of Shajahan Ali, owner of Doyal Traders, that mangoes were being ripened with a chemical called Ethosin, and he was fined Tk 50,000.
