A three-day National Fruit Fair organised by the Ministry of Agriculture begins on Thursday (6 June) at the KIB grounds in Khamarbari in the capital. Held under the theme "Fruit brings nutrition and plenty of income - Bangladesh of smart agriculture", the fair will end on Saturday (8 June).

A ministry press release on Tuesday (4 June) said 8 government and 55 private organisations will take part this year. Different kinds of fruit and fruit-growing technologies will be displayed at a total of 63 stalls.

The fair will be open to all from 10am to 8pm every day. Visitors can learn about fruit-growing technologies and buy chemical-free fruit of different varieties.

On Thursday at 9.30am a colourful rally will go from Manik Mia Avenue in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to the KIB grounds. Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid will open the fair at the KIB grounds at 10am.

A seminar on fruit will follow at the KIB auditorium, with the agriculture minister as chief guest and State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu as special guest.

At the closing ceremony at the BARC auditorium on Saturday afternoon, Md Abdur Razzaque, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Agriculture and former agriculture minister, will be chief guest.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the country produced 1 crore 50 lakh 33 thousand tonnes of fruit in the 2022-23 fiscal year. This included 27 lakh tonnes of mango, 2 lakh 30 thousand tonnes of litchi, 18 lakh 24 thousand tonnes of jackfruit and 5 lakh 80 thousand tonnes of pineapple.
