Narayanganj deputy commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia has thanked a couple who, inspired by the district administration's Green and Clean programme, celebrated their daughter's first birthday by planting saplings.

The couple were thanked at the Narayanganj deputy commissioner's office on the afternoon of Thursday 3 July. The deputy commissioner presented them with a gift box and a tree, and a cake was cut to celebrate their daughter's birthday.

Earlier, Ariful Islam and Asmaul Husna, of the Zila Parishad area of Narayanganj town, had marked the first birthday of their only daughter, Aribah Islam, by planting saplings. When this came to the deputy commissioner's attention, he invited them to his office to thank and honour them.

Asmaul Husna said: "Inspired by the deputy commissioner's Green and Clean project, we decided to celebrate our daughter's birthday differently. Every person has a responsibility to society and the country. That is why we celebrated her birthday in a different way, by planting saplings. I thank the deputy commissioner for honouring us. Being given a sapling as a gift will be a further inspiration for us."

Deputy commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia said that, inspired by Green and Clean and out of a sense of responsibility to the environment, the couple had celebrated their daughter's birthday by planting saplings. He said he did not think anyone else in Bangladesh had done this, and that if everyone had this mindset, the aim of making the city green could be achieved.
