Mango trees everywhere in Narail district have begun to blossom. The branches are covered in yellow blossom, and a pleasant scent has spread all around, a meeting of yellow and green.

Along with the scent of many other flowers, the sweet smell of mango blossom hangs in the air. Swarms of bees hum around the orchards, and small birds perch happily among the blossoms.

Local people say almost every part of the district is covered in blossom. With favourable weather at the start of the season, both orchards and privately owned mango trees are laden. The orchards grow the Amrapali, Gopalbhog, Langra, Fazli and Haribhanga varieties.

A tour of the orchards shows that large and medium-sized trees have more blossom than small ones. The yield, however, depends on the weather. If it stays favourable, Narail's orchard owners expect a bumper mango crop this year.

Mango growers say the blossom came early this year. They are now busy caring for their trees, including spraying fungicide, to get a good yield.

Md Roknuzzaman, agriculture officer of Narail Sadar upazila, said: "Because the trees are cared for regularly throughout the year and watered by building a bund around the base, they get regular nourishment. I hope for a bumper mango crop this year."
