Several dozen flamingos were cut down by a plane's wings, and pieces of their bodies were scattered across the whole area. The incident happened near Mumbai airport on the night of 20 May.
According to Indian media reports, an Emirates Airlines flight was preparing to land at Mumbai airport that night. But as it neared the Ghatkopar area, the plane collided with a flock of flamingos.
There were more than 300 people on board. The plane suffered some damage in the collision with the birds, but fortunately there was no major accident.
At least 40 birds were killed by the plane's wings, and pieces of their bodies were scattered across the whole area.
The plane was due to fly from Mumbai to Dubai, but the flight was cancelled after the accident.
Remains recovered
Seeing the mangled remains of the birds scattered across the area, Ghatkopar residents informed the local forest department. Officials later recovered severed wings, legs, claws and parts of beaks from various places.
Pawan Sharma, founder of the Rescink Association for Wildlife Welfare, said the bodies had been sent for post-mortem to establish the exact cause of the birds' deaths.
