Two sisters have died after going to collect mangoes during a storm in Muktagachha upazila, Mymensingh.

The incident happened at around 3.30pm on 10 May in the Paratungi Madhyapara area of ward 4 of the municipal town.

The dead are Jerin Akter, 6, daughter of Moslem Uddin, and Chan Moni, 4, daughter of Amirul Islam, both of the area. The two were cousins.

Amjad Hossain, councillor of ward 4 of the municipality, confirmed the information to Jagonews.

He said a storm and rain suddenly began at around 3.30pm, and Jerin and Chan Moni went out to collect mangoes. A tree branch broke and fell, killing Jerin on the spot and seriously injuring Chan Moni.

Relatives took Chan Moni to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead, he said. The storm also damaged a number of trees and boro paddy.

Muktagachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer AKM Lutfor Rahman said compensation would be arranged if the victims' families applied to the upazila administration or the deputy commissioner.
