Two huge pythons have been rescued from Sreemangal and Kamalganj in Moulvibazar.

The snakes were rescued on the afternoon of Tuesday, 28 July, from Jagchhara tea garden in Sreemangal upazila and Phulbari tea garden in Kamalganj upazila.

At midday on Tuesday, tea workers in Section 17 of Jagchhara tea garden suddenly spotted a huge python while working. Frightened, they stopped work.

The workers informed Selim Mia, a staff official (babu) of Jagchhara tea garden, who alerted the forest department and the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation. Members of the foundation and the forest department then rescued the snake unharmed in a joint operation. The python was about 16 feet long and weighed about 30 kg.

Meanwhile, members of the Creative Conservation Alliance rescued a 17-foot python from Phulbari tea garden in Kamalganj upazila and handed it over to the forest department.

On the frequent python rescues, locals said the snakes come out of the forest into settlements because of a shortage of food, which is why pythons are often rescued, particularly in Sreemangal upazila.

Sreemangal forest range officer Md Nazmul Islam confirmed the rescue of the two snakes and said: "The pythons will be released into the forest."
