Floods have damaged 95 kilometres of roads in Moulvibazar. In places the roads have broken up, and elsewhere potholes have formed, causing great hardship for travellers.
The district office of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) says about Tk 28 crore is needed to repair and rebuild roads and bridges damaged by the floods. The full account is not yet available, however, because water still covers roads in various places.
Roads broken by the Dhalai
Dhirendra Debnath, a resident of Kamalganj, said: "Erosion by the Dhalai river has left the Adampur–Islampur road in a terrible state. The road has broken in many places and countless potholes have formed. Getting around has become extremely difficult."
Ahmed Abdullah, executive engineer of the LGED in Moulvibazar, said at least Tk 28 crore would be needed to repair the damage to roads so far, but it would take a few more days to get the full picture of losses.
Crops and fish farms
Meanwhile, the district office of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) says Aus was planted on 38,530 hectares in the district this year, of which crops on about 250 hectares were damaged by the floods. In addition, 86 of 3,079 hectares of Aman seedbeds and 65 of 236 hectares of vegetables were flooded.
The district fisheries office says about 405 fish farms in the district were flooded, causing a loss of Tk 1.16 crore. A full list of losses has not yet been made.
