About 1,700 volunteers from 64 environmental organisations planted more than 5,000 trees across the country at the same time on World Environment Day. The programme was organised on Thursday (5 June) by Mission Green Bangladesh, a youth-led environmental organisation.

National co-organisers were the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), the Centre for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS), the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER), the Youth Foundation of Bangladesh, Taru Pallab, Swapnapuri Kalyan Sangstha and Chhawab Foundation. In addition, 56 voluntary organisations from different districts took part locally.

Trees were planted at schools, mosques, temples, homes and along roadsides. With more than 1,700 volunteers taking part, over 5,000 trees were planted in the country's 64 districts.

The programme was opened with tree planting, sapling distribution and public outreach at the Uttara Janapath intersection in the capital. Trees were later planted on the lakeside and road islands of Uttara Sector 13 with the help of the Uttara Student Society.

Speaking at the opening, Mission Green Bangladesh executive director Ahsan Roni said the programme was not just the celebration of a day but the start of a lasting change.
