Farmer Nur Alam has succeeded at his first attempt at growing carrots as a trial in Mirsarai, Chattogram. The carrots are growing steadily underground, swelling as they draw the nutrients they need from the soil.

With the help of the agriculture office, Nur Alam grew carrots on 50 decimals in Gariaish village of Mirsarai Sadar union. He is now harvesting the vegetable at double the profit. Interest in carrots, which bring double profit at low cost, is growing, and because they are being grown there for the first time, people gather to see the field.

Local people said this is the first time carrots have been grown in the area. The carrot field looks very attractive, and many farmers in the area are showing interest in growing them.

Nur Alam said: "I am preparing to grow more in future. It has cost me about Tk 20,000 of my own money. Carrots are fetching a good price, selling at Tk 40 a kg. If the weather stays favourable, I can sell about Tk 1 lakh worth."

Mirsarai upazila agriculture officer Pratap Chandra Roy said: "Carrot is a nutritious vegetable and a promising cash crop for agriculture. If there are arrangements for proper marketing and storage, farmers will benefit. The agriculture office will continue to give farmers every kind of support. In future farmers will come forward to grow carrots and profit greatly from them."
