The Forest Department has rescued 60 padma gokhra (monocled cobra) hatchlings in Mirsarai, Chattogram. The snakes were recovered from Jorarganj union of the upazila and released into the deep hills around Mahamaya Lake on the afternoon of Saturday (2 November).

According to the Mirsarai forest office, 60 cobra eggs were carried by the August floodwater that swept through Feni and Mirsarai to the Jorarganj area. Members of a local rescue team collected the eggs and kept them in a box. On Saturday the snakes were recovered and released into the deep forest of Mahamaya Lake.

Mirsarai range officer Shahanshah Noushad said the 60 hatchlings were recovered from Jorarganj on Saturday afternoon with the rescue team's help and released unharmed into the deep hills of Mahamaya Lake. This will play a great role in conserving the biodiversity of Mahamaya Eco Park, he said.

Divisional forest officer Kajal Talukder and Md Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury, management and planning officer of the Chattogram Forest Department, were present.
