Investigators are looking into whether anyone instigated the deaths of animals at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said.
He told journalists this while visiting the safari park on Sunday afternoon (6 February).
The minister said the ministry had formed a five-member probe committee over the deaths of 11 zebras, a tiger and a lion, and given it 10 working days to report. If the report finds anyone involved, action will be taken against them, and the committee will also track down anyone who instigated the incidents.
Three officials withdrawn
He said three officials involved in managing the park had already been withdrawn in the interest of a fair investigation.
Accompanying the minister were Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar; Mohammad Iqbal Hossain Sabuj, MP for Gazipur-3; ministry secretary Md Mostafa Kamal; additional secretaries Iqbal Abdullah and Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik; Chief Conservator of Forests Amir Hossain Chowdhury; Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md Anisur Rahman; park project director Molla Rezaul Karim; the park's officer in charge Rafiqul Islam; and Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tarikul Islam.
