A snake was allegedly found in the mid-day meal at Mandalpur primary school in Mayureswar, Birbhum district, West Bengal. At least 30 students fell ill after eating the food and were admitted to hospital. The incident happened on Monday.
Locals said the students began vomiting when they heard a snake had been found in the food, and many fell ill. They were later admitted to Rampurhat Medical College.
The mid-day meal was being served at the school on Monday when a dead snake was found in a bucket of dal. Serving was stopped immediately.
Block development officer Dipanjan Jana said parents and villagers had complained that the students fell ill after eating the school food. He said the district inspector had been informed and would visit the school on 10 January.
A police officer said parents and villagers rushed to the school once the news spread, and angry people vandalised it.
