A young fishing cat rescued from a maize field in Meherpur has been released into a forest.

Forest Department officials released it into a local forest at around 11am on Thursday (17 March).

It had been rescued on Wednesday afternoon from a maize field in Harirampur village of Sadar upazila.

Rahedul Haque, a resident of the village, said Abdur Rashid brought the fishing cat cub home from the fields in the afternoon. When the news spread, locals informed the Forest Department, whose staff came and took it away.

Meherpur district forest officer Zafar Ullah told Jago News the fishing cat was about three years old. The cub caught Abdur Rashid's eye while it was playing with its mother; he chased it, caught it and brought it home, after which forest officials rescued it.
