A hilsa weighing three kilograms was caught in the Meghna river off Hatiya in Noakhali on Wednesday morning and sold at an open auction at Chairman Ghat for Tk 10,900.

Local fish wholesaler Akbar Hossain said the fish was caught in the net of fisherman Zahed Majhi. It was brought to Salauddin Member's wholesale shed at about 10am, where the auction, or 'dak', began at once.

As the bids were called out over a hand-held microphone, traders and onlookers crowded the ghat. The fish finally went to local trader Bishu Bepari, the highest bidder.

Akbar Hossain said that although more fish have been turning up in the Meghna lately, a silver hilsa of this size is rare, and the catch gave the ghat a festive air from the morning on.
