Bangladesh ranks fourth in the world in fish production. Fish farmers have contributed to this, as have millions of fishers across the country.

Wild fish are still found in the sea, all the rivers, haors, baors, water bodies, floodplains, ditches and many low-lying fields. In taste and quality, these fish remain the most accepted by people.

Munshiganj is one of the country's most advanced districts. It has Arial Beel, one of the major natural wetlands, and the Padma, Meghna and Dhaleshwari rivers flow through it. So hilsa, rui, catla, pangas, koi, tilapia, shing, magur, tengra, boal and other tasty fish are available all year. Hundreds of tonnes of fish go by truck day and night to Dhaka and across the country, and small and large markets have grown up along the rivers and beels. The market next to the Mawa ferry ghat in Lohajang upazila has been running for more than four decades.
