Agriculturist M Enamul Haque, former director general of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), has built a rich rooftop farm on his own house in Manipuripara in the capital. For 18 years he has researched how to make seedlings of local and foreign vegetables, flowers and fruits suitable for rooftop farming.
Three hundred species
He is working to adapt about 300 local and foreign plant species to the roof. Since retiring in 2001, he has devoted his life fully to developing urban agriculture.
Believing there is no end to learning in farming and that plants and crops teach a great deal, he has applied various technologies and techniques to build a remarkable collection. His small green courtyard has also become the centre of family bonding.
Planned cities
Building planned cities that give importance to agriculture and nature is now most urgent, because that is what will provide pure oxygen and make cities liveable.
