A man in Churachandpur district of India's Manipur state has allegedly been shot dead by a fellow hunter who mistook him for a wild animal. Officials said the incident took place on Monday, 24 August.

The dead man was Ginkhansuan Guite, 60. According to the allegation, he was killed by a shot fired by a fellow hunter from the Muallnuam area.

Initial investigation found that Ginkhansuan and the accused had gone hunting together in the Kawltung area under Muallnuam village. At one point the two became separated in the jungle.

Some time later, the accused mistook Ginkhansuan for a wild animal in the jungle and fired at him, the initial investigation found.

After the incident the accused told the villagers what had happened, and they recovered Ginkhansuan's body from the spot, officials said. Jagonews24 carried the report citing NDTV.
