The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) will build ten hot water treatment plants in Chapainawabganj to increase mango exports. The decision was approved at the 148th meeting of the EPB's governing board, held on Tuesday and chaired by the commerce adviser.

The decision to provide this technological support was taken to expand markets for new exportable products, improve the quality of goods and services, and increase exports of Bangladesh-grown mangoes to international markets.

Earlier, in May, a team led by EPB vice-chairman Md Anwar Hossain visited Chapainawabganj. At an exchange meeting organised by the Chapainawabganj chamber of commerce and the mango exporters' association, a demand was made for these water treatment plants.

The EPB says that although there is a central packing house at Shyampur, it is far from where mangoes are grown, so transporting mangoes there after harvest is time-consuming and expensive. This makes the export price of mangoes relatively high, and they cannot compete on price with neighbouring countries. That is why support is being given to build the plants.

The board meeting also approved the necessary budget for the plants.
