A proposal has been made for courier services to carry mangoes from Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi and Naogaon to the capital, Dhaka, at the same cost. The deputy commissioners of the three districts have agreed on the matter, and the courier services have been asked to give their decision.
Initially, a rate of Tk 10 a kg has been proposed for carrying mangoes from Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi and Naogaon.
Chapainawabganj Deputy Commissioner AKM Galiv Khan announced the initiative at a meeting on mango transport in the conference room of the deputy commissioner's office on the morning of 15 May.
Mango Special Train from 20 May
The deputy commissioner said the Mango Special Train would start running on 20 May, with nine wagons each this time. He added that action would be taken if courier services or other transport charged excessive fares.
Galiv Khan said the cooperation of all mango traders and transport owners and workers was needed to ensure that nothing illegal left the district while mangoes were being sent by courier or other transport. Every vehicle carrying mangoes must display a sticker reading "mango transport vehicle", he said, and strict action would be taken against anyone picking and marketing immature mangoes.
Nasir Uddin, divisional commercial officer of the West Zone railway, told the meeting that the Mango Special Train had five wagons last time and would have eight to nine this time, which could be increased if needed. Considering the convenience of mango transport, there will be two trains: one going and one returning.
