The Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives has launched a Bangladesh-Maldives Green Initiative for cooperation on environmental conservation, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture. Under it, Mianz College School of Agriculture received 21,360 seeds of nine species and 22,360 polybags, and the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding.

The first consignment includes 5,000 guava, 2,500 acacia (akashmoni), 1,600 flame tree (krishnachura), 1,200 neem, 5,000 rain tree (gagan shirish), 700 bakul, 5,000 ipil-ipil, 200 arjun and 160 bahera seeds.

Under the agreement the college will germinate, grow, tend and monitor the seeds, recording growth, survival rates and adaptability in Maldivian soil, climate and conditions. Species that adapt well could later be used in larger-scale planting and greening.

High Commissioner Md Nazmul Islam said the initiative goes beyond supplying seeds and saplings, opening new ground for cooperation on the environment, agricultural research and climate resilience. The High Commission said it is aligned with the Maldives' programme to plant five million trees.

Once the seedlings are ready they will be handed to the High Commission and planted at various sites in coordination with the Maldivian authorities. The High Commissioner thanked Mianz College chairman Ahmed Mottaqi and the college's teachers and officials.
