Malaysia is set to open a new door for Bangladesh's tasty and popular mangoes. After long diplomatic efforts and government coordination, the way for exporting fresh Bangladeshi mangoes to the Malaysian market has now largely been cleared.

In June a high-level team from Malaysia's Department of Agriculture will visit Bangladesh to inspect mango production, storage and export management on the ground.

The Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has been working steadily since 2023 to create the opportunity to export fresh Bangladeshi mangoes to Malaysia. To this end it has kept in regular contact with Bangladesh's Ministry of Agriculture, the Exportable Mango Production Project of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, and has supplied the information and documents required by Malaysia's Department of Agriculture. A pest risk analysis (PRA) report has also been sent.

The High Commission has held several meetings with Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture, its Department of Agriculture, business chambers, potential importers and supershops. Because of the strong demand for mangoes in Malaysia and the large number of Bangladeshi expatriates living there, exporters have shown great interest in the market.

A Bangladesh High Commission release on Tuesday (2 June) said that, as a result of active efforts by the Bangladesh government and the High Commission, Malaysia's Department of Agriculture formally proposed in February 2026 a 'Verification of Compliance' (VoC) inspection of Bangladesh's mango orchards and fresh fruit packing facilities. Under Malaysia's rules, such an inspection is a vital precondition for completing the pest risk analysis (PRA) needed to import fresh mangoes.

Agreeing to Malaysia's proposal, the relevant Bangladeshi government agencies have completed the necessary preparations. A two-member high-level team from Malaysia's Department of Agriculture will observe various mango-growing areas, packing arrangements, storage facilities and export readiness in Bangladesh from 7 to 13 June 2026.

The DAE's Exportable Mango Production Project, under the Ministry of Agriculture, will coordinate and manage the whole inspection.

Those involved hope that if the inspection confirms the required quality and safety conditions are met, exports of fresh Bangladeshi mangoes to Malaysia could begin this mango season. Opening the Malaysian market would not only open a new horizon for Bangladesh's mango exports but also create opportunities for Bangladeshi mangoes to enter other South-East Asian countries.

According to people in the export sector, the successful entry of Bangladeshi mangoes into Malaysia will play an important role in diversifying the country's farm exports, earning foreign currency and increasing the acceptance of Bangladeshi farm products in international markets.
