With its unique blend of taste, quality and tradition, Magura's litchi has once again brought life back to the local economy. Since the litchi of the district's Hazrapur area was recognised as a geographical indication (GI) product, its fame has spread further across the country. The fruit has started reaching the market early in the season.
Those involved say yields vary somewhat across the district this season but overall production is satisfactory. In some places there is a bumper crop, in others comparatively less, but growers are smiling with relief.
Orchards bring jobs
More than 3,000 commercial litchi orchards have been set up in Magura Sadar upazila, adding a new dimension to the region's farm-based economy. Alongside local varieties, Bombai and China-3 litchis are becoming increasingly popular. The litchi season has had a positive impact on the rural economy, creating work at every stage from tending orchards to picking and marketing.
Local worker Mst Aleya Begum said that getting regular work during the season brings some comfort to their households. Orchard owner Md Billal Hossain is hopeful that if fair prices are ensured, it will be a profitable season this year.
Traders also said early litchi prices are satisfactory at the start of the season. Local litchis are now selling for Tk 250 to Tk 300 per hundred, a positive sign for growers.
Tk 85 crore in trade expected
According to the agriculture department, litchi has been grown on 531 hectares in Magura Sadar upazila this year, and litchi trade worth about Tk 85 crore is expected this season.
Md Masud Rana, Magura Sadar upazila agriculture officer, said: "Litchi production is fairly good this year. If proper market management and fair prices can be ensured, growers will benefit more."
Those involved hope that, although production varies somewhat, Magura's litchi could open new possibilities this season if market management stays on track.
