The Madinah city authority has launched a "Green City Initiative" across Madinah to improve quality of life, increase greenery and ensure environmental sustainability. The programme formally began on Monday (20 October).

Under the initiative, 2.1 million trees will be planted in Madinah. The project aims to increase the city's plant cover, cut carbon emissions, lower temperatures and enhance the city's beauty. It will also ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and help improve residents' quality of life.

According to a Saudi Press Agency report, the project is directly aligned with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030. It puts emphasis on digital technology: a smart tree-tagging system will be used to monitor the growth and health of each tree.

The municipal authority said the aim is to build Madinah into a leading green city. Large-scale planting will take place along the city's roads, in parks and in residential areas, and residents will be encouraged to take part in environmentally friendly volunteer activities.

The project is not limited to conservation; it will also help make Madinah an attractive tourist city. The municipality says its long-term goal is to blend this city of Islamic heritage with modern ideas of sustainable development and establish it as an exemplary green city for the world.

In short, the Green City Initiative is part of Saudi Arabia's green revolution, meant to tackle the effects of climate change on one hand and build a clean, liveable Madinah for future generations on the other.
