A housewife named Khadija Begum, 24, has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Madaripur. The snake, hiding in a stack of firewood, bit her as she picked up wood for cooking.

The incident happened on the morning of 7 July in North Kolchori (Sastal) village of Alinagar union in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur. Khadija Begum was the daughter of Abdur Razzak Howlader of the same village and the wife of Zakir Bepari.

According to police and local sources, she went into the kitchen in the morning to fetch firewood for cooking when a venomous snake hidden in the pile bit her on the hand. She fell ill and family members rushed her to the Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital, where a doctor declared her dead.

Dr Shihab Uddin, medical officer at the Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital, said: "The patient died before she was brought to the hospital. She was declared dead after examination."

Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdur Razzak, in charge of the hospital police outpost, confirmed the incident.
