When haemoglobin is not at the right level, the body is seriously affected. Haemoglobin mainly helps oxygen circulate properly through the whole body, so when it falls, several problems can appear. These are the signs that you may be suffering from a haemoglobin problem.

Warning signs


  • You may feel extremely tired, with the body becoming weak and exhausted after little effort.
  • There may be chest pain and difficulty breathing, and the heart rate may suddenly rise.
  • Headache, dizziness and cold hands and feet may appear.
  • Nails become brittle, the tongue burns and the skin may turn pale.

These signs indicate a haemoglobin deficiency, so it is important to see a doctor quickly. Alongside medicine, there are some fruits and vegetables that will raise your haemoglobin level on their own.

Fruits and vegetables that help


  • Berries contain antioxidants and vitamin C and help keep haemoglobin at the right level.
  • Pomegranate is rich in iron, calcium and fibre, all three of which help maintain haemoglobin properly.
  • Citrus fruits, rich in vitamin C, raise haemoglobin levels, as vitamin C increases the amount of iron the body absorbs.
  • Green broccoli has many benefits, containing iron, folate and vitamin C, which keep haemoglobin at the right level.
  • Eating beetroot keeps haemoglobin levels good. Beetroot contains iron, folic acid, potassium and fibre, which help maintain haemoglobin at the right level.
