The Bengali month of Jaistha has begun, bringing more heatwaves. Along with crops, cattle, ducks and chickens need special care at this time, and steps should be taken on a veterinarian's advice. Here is what to do for livestock now.

• Vaccinate ducks and chickens at this time after consulting a veterinarian.
• For Ranikhet (Newcastle disease), vaccines available on the market include Nobilis ND Lasota, NDLS, Cevac New L, Izovac ND Killed, Newcavac, Imopest and Newcastle Lasota. For Gumboro disease, Nobilis 228, Cevac Gumbo L and Izovac Gumbo-2 can be given.
• For fowl pox in ducks and chickens, Cevac FPL, Nobilis and Ovodiphtherin are available.
• Give deworming medicine to ducks and chickens, take proper measures against coccidiosis, and urgently give other preventive vaccines.
• Finish hatching chicks and ducklings before the full monsoon.
• Before the rains, tidy and repair cattle sheds, clean the surroundings and arrange quick drainage of standing water.
• Ensure a regular and measured supply of cattle feed for the monsoon and carry out other tasks properly.
• Take preventive measures, including vaccination, against haemorrhagic septicaemia (galaphola), diarrhoea, foot-and-mouth disease, pneumonia and other diseases in cattle.
