The lion is called the royal wild animal, the king of the forest. But it is now on the list of endangered species. Two kinds survive: the African lion and the Asian lion.

Known to people as a charismatic animal, the lion is powerful, swift and remarkably beautiful, which is why it appears so often in product branding and advertising around the world. Here are some facts about lions.

Of all the cat species, the lion has the loudest roar. It can reach 114 decibels and be heard from five miles away.

The reason is the shape of the lion's vocal apparatus. Most animals' vocal cords are triangular, but a lion's are square and also flat. This lets them control air very easily, which means a powerful roar with little effort.

A wildlife study found that to survive, a lioness needs an average of five kg of meat a day and a male lion seven kg. The study also found that the animal eats eight to nine kg of meat in a day.
