A sick lioness has died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur, Gazipur. She died in the park's African safari at 1pm on Thursday (3 February), aged about 11.
Dipankar Bar, senior information officer of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, confirmed the death.
He said the lioness's illness was first detected on 11 August last year, when fluid collected under her belly and a bag-like part was seen hanging. She had problems with her left leg at various times, bled from the mouth and showed signs of breathing difficulty. She was then kept under treatment.
Final hours
On Wednesday afternoon (2 February), the lioness lay down shaking all four legs and trembling. The park's veterinary surgeon, Dr Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, treated her. When the breathing difficulty returned from Thursday morning, she died at around 1pm.
Between 2 and 24 January, 11 zebras and a tiger died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park. The lioness died before the shock of those deaths had worn off.
