A black-faced langur (mukhpora hanuman) has entered a human settlement in Phulbari, Dinajpur, in search of food. The langur is taking food from homes and shops in the upazila town, and for several days it has been seen in Nimtala and other parts of the town.

Local people said the langur strayed from its troop and came into the settlement looking for food, and has been wandering around various parts of Phulbari for several days. Although the authorities know about it, they have shown little interest in rescuing it. Curious onlookers are feeding it apples, bananas, bread and other food.

Shilpi Rani is the only banana seller at the Katabari Bangla School crossroads. On Saturday she set up her stall as usual, with bananas of various varieties such as Chini Champa, Sagar and Malbhog arranged in rows. At around 2:30pm the langur arrived, ate three bananas and then climbed onto the wall by the gate of the neighbouring primary school to sit.

Local journalist Md Harun-ur-Rashid, who lives at Katabari Bangla School crossroads, said he had seen the langur. It is thought to have entered the settlement in search of food, he said, adding that a similar langur had been seen in the upazila before.
