A court in Lakshmipur has sentenced a young man named Md Babul to one year in jail for poaching dahuk (white-breasted waterhen) birds. He was also fined Tk 100.

Executive Magistrate Md Shahidul Islam of the Deputy Commissioner's office handed down the sentence through a mobile court on the afternoon of Monday (28 February).

Babul is the son of Foyez Ahmed of Chandkhali village in Laharkandi union, Sadar upazila.

Local forest officials said Babul caught seven waterhens in Dakshin Hamchhadi union of Sadar upazila. When he tried to sell the birds, local people held him and informed the Forest Department. Officials went to the spot and detained him, and a mobile court then sentenced him to one year in jail.

Chandan Bhowmik, officer-in-charge (SFNTC) of the Dalal Bazar forest office, said hunting, transporting, selling or keeping wild birds without permission is banned. The rescued birds have been released, he said.

Shahidul Islam, assistant commissioner at the Lakshmipur Deputy Commissioner's office, said the convict has been sent to jail.
