Fifteen venomous cobra hatchlings have been found after the earthen floor of a bedroom was dug up in Khoksa, Kushtia.

On Friday morning (14 July) a local snake charmer dug up the bedroom floor of an elderly woman named Achhia Khatun in Shimulia Kuthipara, Shimulia union, Khoksa upazila, and caught the cobra hatchlings.

Since the death of her husband Akmal Sheikh, the elderly woman has been living in a kutcha room at the home of her brother Rezon Molla. Rezon Molla said several live cobra hatchlings were caught when his sister's mud room was dug up in the morning. Thirty snake egg shells were found under the ground, but the mother snake was not found. The live hatchlings were handed to the snake charmer. The venomous hatchlings that had been beaten to death at various times were buried.

He said several cobra hatchlings had been seen at his house for four or five days. Each was two to two and a half feet long, and one or two were beaten to death every day. On Thursday evening (13 July), seven hatchlings came out of his sister's room one after another and were beaten to death with the help of neighbours. His whole family is now afraid of snakes.

Achhia Khatun said she had gone to visit her daughter's home. She had not realised that she had been living with snakes all this time.
