A mother named Ayesha Khatun, 25, and her seven-month-old daughter Nusrat Jahan have died after being bitten by a snake while they slept in Kushtia.

The incident happened on the night of Wednesday, 23 August. Ayesha Khatun was the wife of Md Ibrahim of Bhabanipur village in Kanchanpur union of Sadar upazila.

Anisuzzaman Jhantu, chairman of Kanchanpur union, confirmed the deaths of the mother and daughter from the snakebite.

He said Ayesha and her baby were sleeping in their bedroom on Wednesday night, as on any other day, when a venomous snake bit them both. The child died before anyone realised what had happened. Ayesha Khatun was taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where she also died at around 10:30am on Thursday, 24 August.

The union parishad chairman added that villagers had recovered the venomous snake from under the bed in Ibrahim's house. The deaths of a mother and daughter together from a snakebite have cast a pall of grief over Bhabanipur village, he said.
