Tree-planting programmes were held simultaneously at all golf clubs in the country on the instructions of the Bangladesh Golf Federation.

The programme was opened at Kurmitola Golf Club in Dhaka Cantonment on Thursday, 30 June, the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said in a press release.

The chief guest at the opening was Major General Md Zahirul Islam, GOC and Area Commander, Logistics Area, Dhaka, and vice-president of Kurmitola Golf Club. The programme began with the release of balloons and the planting of Haribhanga mango saplings.

Members of the club's executive committee, club officials and staff, members of the Bangladesh Golf Federation and the club's ball boys were present.

According to environment and nature experts, natural disasters such as earthquakes, lightning, landslides, floods, droughts and tidal surges are becoming more severe in the country. Environmental scientists say only tree planting can greatly reduce the rate or severity of these disasters.

The Bangladesh government holds a tree-planting programme every year to build a green country. This year a three-month tree-planting programme has been announced from 5 June to 12 September.
