"It gets rid of body aches, so I cooked one and ate it, and kept the other locked up," said Harun Howlader, 40, of Nabinpur in ward 6 of Kuakata municipality, Patuakhali. He had not cooked beef, goat or chicken, but a jackal caught in the forest.
He described cooking the jackal to KM Bachchu, a member of the Kalapara team of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali.
Team members went to Harun's house on the afternoon of Thursday (25 May) after hearing that a jackal had been slaughtered there, and rescued a live jackal from the house. Ward councillor Md Mojibur Rahman, KM Bachchu and Shawon of the Kalapara upazila branch of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali, and others were present.
"I didn't know it was banned"
Harun Howlader said: "I caught two jackals in the forest. I heard that if you cook and eat them, you won't have any pain in your body. So I cooked and ate one and kept the other in a cage. But I didn't know catching them was banned. I won't do it again."
KM Bachchu told Jagonews: "We learnt from a tip-off that a jackal had been slaughtered and was being cooked. We rushed there, but the cooked jackal had already been eaten. We found another locked in a cage, rescued it and informed the forest department."
Abul Kalam, range officer of the Mohipur forest department, said killing wildlife is a punishable offence. The rescued animal will be released at night, he said.
