A dead porpoise dolphin about 4 feet long has washed up on Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali. There were no marks on its body, but its outer skin had come off.

KM Bachchu, a member of the Kuakata Dolphin Rokkha Committee, spotted it at 7am on 28 March (Monday) in the Jhaubon point area, and other committee members were informed.

Bachchu told Jagonews that the dolphin, about 4 feet long and 1 foot wide, had no injury marks on its body but its outer skin had come off. It is thought to have died the previous night. Committee members later buried it.

Sagarika Smriti, associate researcher with the USAID/Eco-Fish 2 WorldFish Bangladesh project in Patuakhali district, told Jagonews that the dolphin found dead was a young porpoise. "We will send our Blue Guard members to collect samples from it."

Ruman Imtiaz Tushar, team leader of the Kuakata Dolphin Rokkha Committee, told Jagonews that the dolphin was small, a young porpoise. Several dead turtles and dolphins had come ashore on Kuakata beach this month alone. They are dying in fishermen's nets, from collisions with large sea vessels and from old age. "We are very worried about this," he said.
