A 10-foot dead dolphin has washed up on Kuakata beach in Patuakhali. Local fishermen spotted it on the beach next to Lembur Bon at 11am on Sunday (9 May) and informed the fisheries department and Kuakata municipality officials.

Locals said there were injury marks on various parts of the animal's body. It is suspected to have died from being hit by fishermen's nets. Several dead dolphins and whales have washed up on the beach before.

The fisheries department has not been able to confirm why these animals are dying.

Patuakhali district fisheries officer Molla Emdadullah said fisheries officials had been sent to Kuakata and that an attempt would be made to carry out a post-mortem to find the cause of death.

If the carcass is in too poor a condition, however, the dolphin will be buried, he said.
