The Dhaka North city unit of Bangladesh Krishak League has planted 1,000 fruit, timber and medicinal trees by the lake and along the road at the Sector 15 bridge in Uttara in the capital.

The planting took place on the morning of Saturday (29 June), led by Krishak League president Samir Chanda, an agriculturist. This was announced in a press release signed by the organisation's office secretary, Rezaul Karim Reza.

The Krishak League president said: "To mark 52 years since the founding of Bangladesh Krishak League, we will plant 52 lakh trees this year over the three months of Asharh, Shraban and Bhadra. As well as planting, every tree must be cared for and looked after once planted."

He also said that on the instructions of Prime Minister "Krishakratna" Sheikh Hasina, leaders of the Awami League, Krishak League and all associate bodies plant trees whether the party is in power or not, while the "anti-liberation BNP-Jamaat clique" cuts trees whether in power or not. The grassroots of the Krishak League must be strengthened further to stop these tree-cutters' anti-state activities, he said.

Speaking as chief speaker, Krishak League acting general secretary Biswanath Sarkar Bitu, an agriculturist, said: "Trees are true friends of people and the environment. So come, let each of us plant 52 trees this year."

The programme was presided over by Dhaka North Krishak League president Maksudul Islam. Those taking part included Krishak League vice-president Akbar Ali Chowdhury, organising secretary Dr Habibur Rahman Molla, Nure Alam Siddiqui Haque, acting publicity and publications secretary Nurul Islam Badsha, assistant law secretary Advocate Rabeya Haque, Dhaka North Krishak League general secretary Halim Khan and Lutfur Rahman, convener of the Dhaka North Krishak League tree-planting programme.

Other central and Dhaka North Krishak League leaders were also present.

On 15 June, the first day of Asharh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Krishak League's three-month tree-planting programme covering Asharh, Shraban and Bhadra. As part of it, 1,000 fruit, timber and medicinal trees were planted today by the lake at the No 2 bridge in Uttara Sector 15 and along the road.
