Members of the Society for Snake and Snakebite Awareness (3SA) have rescued a 12-foot king cobra at Chittagong University (CU).

The snake was rescued on the afternoon of Sunday (12 April) from an area next to the university's old Arts Faculty.

It was learnt that a student of the Department of Theatre in the old Arts Faculty saw the king cobra and called the organisation's helpline number. The rescue team then reached the spot and safely captured the snake.

Ibrahim Khalil Al Haider, an adviser to 3SA and assistant professor of zoology, said there are environmental reasons why king cobras have been seen several times on the campus. The hills on the university's western side are occupied by the forest department and local people, so snakes are coming into inhabited areas. "The snake rescued today has been kept with us for research. It will then be released into the forest," he said.
