The Forest Department and a local wildlife rescue team have rescued a slow loris, a rare and endangered species, in Matiranga, Khagrachhari. The animal is now being treated.
It was rescued on Tuesday from the Shantipur area of Gomti union in the upazila. Farid Mia, divisional forest officer of the Khagrachhari Forest Department, confirmed the rescue.
Wounds to the eyes and body
Md Ahsan, a member of the wildlife rescue team, said local people saw the injured loris and informed the team and the Forest Department. The rescue team then went and brought the animal back safely.
Md Hasan, an employee of the Matiranga forest office, said: "The rescued loris was taken to the animal hospital on Wednesday (6 May) morning and given treatment. It has injury marks on its eyes and in various places on its body."
He added that the rare animal is being kept for now in a safe place in the Pitachhara forest area and will be taken back to hospital for treatment as needed.
To be released once it recovers
Divisional forest officer Farid Mia said the rare slow loris is a very sensitive animal. Such lorises usually live in dense forest and avoid contact with people.
He said the species is now under threat because of illegal hunting and other human causes. "We are giving it treatment with the highest priority. Once it recovers, the animal will be released into its natural habitat," he said.
The Forest Department said the slow loris is listed as endangered on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
