Food supplies have been distributed among 300 families affected by the recent flood in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari. Reaffirming his commitment to stand by disaster-hit people, local MP Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan promised the necessary steps for rehabilitation and infrastructure development.

The relief was distributed at Betchhari in Merung union of the upazila on Sunday, 2 August, with the support of Kazuko Bhuiyan Welfare Trust and Multi Serve International (MSI).

As chief guest, the MP handed food supplies to the 300 flood-affected families. Before and after the distribution he spoke to family members, listened to their hardships and needs and asked after their overall situation.

Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan said that, as a representative elected by the people's votes, it was his moral duty to stand by the people of the area in good times and bad. All necessary steps would be taken to rehabilitate flood victims, he said. Homes that were damaged would be rebuilt, and damaged roads and other infrastructure would be repaired in phases.

He added that everyone must work together, through coordinated efforts of the government, local administration, social organisations and elected representatives, to bring the lives of affected people back to normal in the face of disaster.

District BNP general secretary M A Afsar, joint general secretaries Mosharraf Hossain and Rinku Chakma, Dighinala upazila BNP president Shafiqul Islam, general secretary Joynal Abedin and other district and upazila BNP leaders and activists were present.

Continuous rain and hill runoff caused flooding in Dighinala upazila in July. About 20,000 people were stranded by water, and many families' homes, farmland and local infrastructure were badly damaged.
