Chinumong Marma, a farmer in Borbili, Betbunia union, Kawkhali upazila, Rangamati, has grown coloured cauliflower for the first time on a one-bigha trial plot of his own land, and it has given him hopes of success. The crop has yielded more than 3,000 kg, and each cauliflower weighs 1.5–2 kg on average.

Chinumong Marma said a demonstration of hybrid coloured cauliflower was set up in Borbili village, Betbunia union, under the project to strengthen nutrition and food security through agricultural development.

After receiving the demonstration from the agriculture office, he began growing it on one bigha as a trial and got a good yield at the first attempt. There is demand for coloured cauliflower in the market too, and he said he had sold it at an average of Tk 60 a kg.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer Sahiduzzaman Sahed said coloured cauliflower had been grown in the upazila for the first time. Because it is unusual and attractive, there is strong demand in the local market, and it sells for Tk 10–15 a kg more than ordinary cauliflower.

Kawkhali upazila agriculture officer Rasel Sarkar said: "This hybrid coloured cauliflower is not only beautiful to look at but also full of nutrients. The big advantage of growing it is that the highest yield can be had using only organic fertiliser, without any pesticide. There are plans to expand cultivation widely in the upazila next year."
