The biggest mango in the country is now at Kansat in Chapainawabganj. Called Chiang Mai, the Thai mango is selling at Kansat mango market for Tk 7,000 a maund (Tk 175 a kg), and curious crowds are gathering to see the new variety.

The mangoes were brought to Kansat market by Kabir Hossain, a farmer from Basantapur village in Chakkirti union, Shibganj upazila.

Kabir Hossain said he grew Chiang Mai mangoes on two bighas this season, and that the fruit is as tasty as it is attractive.

"I came to Kansat market this morning with a van-load of Chiang Mai mangoes. Everyone is amazed when they see them, and many come and take photographs. I am asking Tk 7,000 a maund for them. Buyers have offered Tk 6,500," he said.

Shibganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Nayan Mia said: "Chiang Mai is a famous Thai mango variety. It is still new in our country, and farmers have started growing it individually. It looks beautiful and tastes good. If it is grown commercially, farmers will profit."

Kansat market is now selling seven or eight mango varieties, including Amrapali, Fazli, Ashwina, BARI-4 and Banana mango.
