Kansat in Chapainawabganj is the first name that comes to mind when mango markets are mentioned. At least Tk 30 to 35 crore worth of mangoes are bought and sold every day at this, the country's largest mango market.

Recently, however, the shutdown and curfew brought mango sales down to Tk 8 to 10 crore. The situation is now largely back to normal, and mangoes worth Tk 30 to 35 crore are being sold daily at the market.

Jago News spoke on Monday afternoon, 29 July, with Omar Faruk Tipu, general secretary of Kansat Aam Arotdar Samabay Samity Limited, the Kansat mango wholesalers' cooperative.

He said the quota movement had also affected the mango market, as trucks loaded with mangoes could not reach their destinations on time. Things are now largely normal, he said, and mangoes worth Tk 30 to 35 lakh are being sold daily. Mangoes are traded at around 500 wholesale depots every day, and thousands of labourers are working.

Varieties on sale at the market include Ashwina, Fazli, Amrapali, Banana Mango, BARI-4, BARI-11, Haribhanga and Gourmoti.

This year the agriculture department has set a target of producing 450,000 tonnes of mangoes in the district, up from 425,000 tonnes last year.
