BARI-7 mangoes are selling at the highest price at Kansat, the biggest mango market in Chapainawabganj, at Tk 4,500 to 5,000 a maund. Last year the price was about Tk 7,500. Traders say BARI-7 is still the highest-priced mango in the district this season.

At Kansat, Asraf Ali of Dhainagar union in Shibganj upazila was standing with a van load (three crates) of deep red mangoes.

He told Jagonews: "We have an Amrapali orchard in Dhainagar union, where I planted 50 BARI-7 trees as a hobby. They are bearing fruit now, and today I brought BARI-7 mangoes to the Kansat market. I am asking Tk 5,000 a maund, but buyers are offering Tk 4,500, so I am standing here with the van. The mangoes look wonderful and taste good, so they cost more than other mangoes."

He added that prices are much lower this year than in other years. "Last year I sold these mangoes at Tk 7,000 a maund."

Umar Faruk Tipu, general secretary of the Kansat Bazar mango wholesalers' traders' cooperative society, said Amrapali, Ashwina, BARI-4, BARI-7 and Fazli mangoes are on the market now, but BARI-7 is very scarce, so its price is higher.

Mangoes have been grown on 37,855 hectares in the district this year, with a production target of 4.25 lakh tonnes.
