Miscreants have severely beaten a teacher, Jane Alam (38), in Kalmakanda upazila of Netrokona after he stopped them picking mangoes.

The incident took place at about 10:30am on Monday (29 May) at 37 No Chemti Government Primary School in Barakhapan union of the upazila.

The injured teacher, Jane Alam, is an assistant teacher at the school. He is being treated at Kalmakanda upazila health complex.

The school's headteacher, Pranesh Ranjan Biswas, said several people including locals Sona Mia, Wahab Ali and Mokshed Ali had been scheming to pick mangoes from a mango tree at the school. When they went to pick them on Monday, Jane Alam told them not to. Angered, they entered the classroom and beat him severely. Students and other teachers rescued the badly injured teacher and he was admitted to the upazila health complex.

Shariful Islam, a doctor in the emergency department of Kalmakanda upazila health complex, said: "Jane Alam has been bleeding from the ear and has injury marks on different parts of his body. He has been advised to go to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment."

The accused Sona Mia, Wahab Ali and Mokshed could not be reached for comment as their mobile phones were switched off.

However, Sona Mia's brother, former UP member Sajal Mia, said: "I have heard about the beating. Both sides are at fault. We donated the land for the school, and the school's boundary has still not been fixed."

Babul Hossain, general secretary of the Kalmakanda upazila primary teachers' association, said a written complaint would be filed with the police against the accused. He demanded exemplary punishment for those involved.

Kalmakanda police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abul Kalam said he was not aware of the matter. If a complaint is received, legal action will be taken after investigation.
