A schoolgirl named Sumi Akter, 14, has died after being bitten by a snake in her sleep in Kaliganj, Lalmonirhat.
She died on the morning of Wednesday 11 October on the way to the upazila health complex. Sumi was a class nine pupil at Chaparhat High School in the upazila.
Locals said Sumi went to sleep as usual after dinner. At around 11:30pm a venomous snake that had been sitting on her bed bit her on the right hand. The venom spread through her body at once, but her family did not realise this and used faith-healing chants instead. When her condition worsened, she died at dawn before she could be taken to Kaliganj upazila health complex.
Family did not realise
The girl's grandfather, Joynal Abedin, said: "We didn't understand that a snake had bitten her. She just kept saying something had bitten her. But later she wouldn't let anyone move her body; her whole body was writhing in pain. At dawn, when she became very ill, she died on the way to hospital."
Iqbal Hossain, chairman of Dalgram union, said a schoolgirl had died of a snakebite.
Imtiaz Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj police station, confirmed the incident. He said a beat officer had been sent to the area, and he would be able to give details when the officer returned.
